Order of Service, 22 March 2020

Fourth Sunday in Lent 22nd March 2020

Live stream only Service led by the Revd Lucy Brierley.
We are now broadcasting an act of worship from the church  or the manse each Sunday morning at 10.30am. You can tune in via Facebook (www.facebook.com/wokingurc) or on the front page of our church website (www.wokingurc.org.uk). If you would like support in accessing either of these, please let us know and we will endeavour to help. Please do not turn up at the church on Sunday as there won’t be anyone there. This is the order of service so you can can join in from home and the sound of praise will be ringing right across our town!

On Sunday, Churches Together in England is calling all Churches to a National Day of Prayer and Action. At such a time as this, when so many are fearful and there is great uncertainty, we are reminded of our dependence on our loving Heavenly Father and the future that he holds.  At 7pm please light a candle in the windows of your homes as a visible symbol of the light of life, Jesus Christ, our source and hope in prayer.
Welcome and Notices  Call to Worship – Romans 8 v37-39   37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Hymns –   Now when peace like a river
1.  Now when peace like a river attendeth my soul,
And when sorrows like sea billows roll,
Then whatever my lot You have taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Chorus
It is well with my soul when the storms of winter blow,
And the cares of this world take their toll.
In the heat of the day there is grace enough to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

2.  And when Satan should tempt me and trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control:
For He sees every weakness and knows every fear,
And has shed His own blood for my soul.
Horatio Gates Spafford, Phil Baggaley, Stuart Townend
Blessed Be Your Name
Blessed Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s ‘all as it should be’
Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name
  Prayers & The Lord’s Prayer
Thank you Lord God for the opportunity of worship,
for the freedom to lift your name on high wherever we are today.
We praise you for the warmth of your embrace and the comfort of your
presence.

We thank you that in worship we can put aside,
the uncertainties of this world and rest
upon the certainties of the Kingdom,
for your promises are not changeable.
God, today we come with many emotions before you. But even as we turn our mind to you, we are already reminded of the truths we know about who you are how much you care for us.

Thank you that we can bring to your feet
all the hurts and fears that trouble us,
and leave them there,
knowing that your strength and assurance are all that we require.
Thank you that as we draw near in worship, we can rest and be at peace in your presence, may we find healing, wholeness and refreshment.

God of majesty and power,
Who spoke and this world was,
Who breathed and this world lived,
Who counts the hairs upon our head,
Who sees our thoughts and reads our hearts,
Who loves us more than we deserve,
Who cares passionately about all that we are feeling today,
We worship you and we lift your name on high.

Eternal God, forgive us for the times when we have failed to trust in you.
Forgive us when we have been short tempered with others because we ourselves are stressed or frustrated.
Forgive us when we have failed to put the needs of others before our own.
Forgive us for the times when we failed to remember that you are sovereign and that you meant it when you said you would leave us or forsake us.

In the quietness, hear our prayers.

Christ Jesus, you came into the world to save sinner and we rejoice that your desire and will is to forgive us. Gladly we receive your forgiveness now as we join our voices together in your prayer…

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Hymn – Creep, creep, creep (Let you light shine)

1. Creep, creep, creep in the dark fear comes to blow out all your lights.

Sermon

Hymn – Faithful God

Faithful God, faithful God,

all sufficient One,

I worship You

Shalom, my peace,

my strong deliverer,

faithful God

I lift You up,

Prayers for Others   (including Hymn – Father I place into your hands)
Loving God, There is so much we don’t understand at the moment, and much which frightens us. We are seeing our lives change dramatically and many things are out of our control. We offer to you now everything that we are feeling, even those things we struggle to express. We thank you that you are a God who isn’t distant and far off, but who cares about the details of our lives. We thank you that in Jesus you came to live among us and experienced all the human emotions we feel. We thank you that because of him, we are never alone.

Father, I place into your hands the things that I can’t do
Father, I place into your hands the times that I’ve been through.
Father, I place into your hands the way that I should go,
for I know I always ca
n trust you.

Today we’re concerned about people we love and perhaps can’t see at the moment. We pray especially for those who are unwell or have lost loved ones as a result of the coronavirus. We pray for those who have health complications on top of the worry about the virus. We thank you for the gift of the telephone and online communications.

Help us to use them well to be a blessing to others. We pray for all those working hard to serve others. We remember our government and the civil service, those working in healthcare and hospitals, schools and teachers trying to work out the way forward for vulnerable children, parents trying to work from home as well as looking after their children, those caring for others at home or in residential homes, those serving us in our shops and keeping food supplies going. We remember students who will not be able to sit their exams and all children whose school year has been cut short and who feel such a sense of loss. We pray for all who are missing the things they usually do and especially for those who are disappointed at the cancelation of big events they were looking forward.

We remember places and situations in the world which are no longer in our headlines but where great suffering continues to happen. Keep us faithful in prayer for them, that they won’t be forgotten.

Father, I place into your hands my friends and family.
Father, I place into your hands the things that trouble me.
Father, I place in to your hands the person I would be,
for I know I always can trust you

God of hope, we  pray for the church. Keep us faithful and strong, a bright shining light for you. As we grieve the things we have lost, may we hold onto all to the truth that we are still a family, joined by cords that cannot be broken.
We pray for ourselves, in the face of life’s uncertainties and challenges, we ask the assurance of Christ’s presence, power and love. Keep us faithful in worship and prayer and safe in the knowledge that nothing can ever separate us from your love, in Christ our Lord.

Father, we love to see your face, we love to hear your voice.
Father, we love to sing your praise, and in your name rejoice.
Father, we love to walk with you and in your presence rest,
for we know we always can trust you.

We pray, keep our faith focused on Christ and fill us with your Holy Spirit, that we may give you all the glory.
Amen

Hymn – Great is thy faithfulness

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Chorus
“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
  Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Chorus

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Blessing
